Consciousness Raising in Contemporary Culture:
A conversation with Marlene McCarty & Christine Vachon
Wednesday April 11, 2012, 6:30pm
From their vocal and overt outrage over the AIDS crisis in 1980s to their distinct careers in film and visual arts, film producer Christine Vachon and artist Marlene McCarty have spent their lives creating conscious raising dialogues within the context of contemporary culture. Skillfully using the tools of film, marketing, visual arts, and activism, Vachon and McCarty have steadfastly protected and promoted marginalized voices and points of view in an effort to effect social change through mainstream mediated forms. Vachon and McCarty met in New York in the late 1980’s, when they were both involved withActUp!

McCarty became one of the founding members of Gran Fury, and has pursued a cross-disciplinary career ever since. She works as an artist, teacher, and designer.

Christine is a prolific film producer and has built a stellar reputation her fiercely guarding independent film production outside the main stream studio system. She has worked on more than 65 films, including the Oscar winning Boys Don’t Cry, Happiness, Kids, and more than 30 films by first time film directors.

Christine and Marlene will talk about how their individual and collective outlooks were shaped by the AIDS crisis and the impact it had on their practices.
